Scientific activities in Indonesia started in the 16th century by Jacob Bontius , who studied Indonesian flora and Rompiusdengan famous work entitled Herbarium Amboinese . At the end of the 18th century formed Bataviaasch Genotschap van Wetenschappen . In 1817 , C.G.L. Reinwardt founded Botanical Indonesia ( S \ ' land Plantentuin ) in Bogor . In 1928 the Dutch government established Natuurwetenschappelijk Raad voor Nederlandsch Indie . Then in 1948 changed to Organisatie voor Natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek ( Organization for Research in the Natural Sciences , which is known as OPIPA ) . The agency is carrying out its duties until 1956.
In 1956 , through Law no . 6 In 1956 the Indonesian government established Science Council of Indonesia ( MIPI ) with basic tasks :
Guiding the development of science and technology .
Giving consideration to the government in terms of scientific wisdom .
Then in 1962 the government established the National Research Affairs Department ( DURENAS ) and put inside the MIPI additional task : to build and nurture a National Research Institute . And in 1966 the government changed the status of the National Research Institute DURENAS into ( LEMRENAS ) .
In August 1967 the government abolished LEMRENAS and MIPI with Presidential Decree no. 128 in 1967 , then by MPRS Decree no. 18/B/1967 government formed Indonesian Institute of Sciences ( LIPI ) and accommodate all tasks LEMRENAS and MIPI , with the following main tasks :
Guiding the development of science and technology rooted in Indonesia in order to be utilized for the welfare of the people of Indonesia in particular and mankind in general .
Search for scientific truth in which scientific freedom , freedom of research and freedom of the pulpit is recognized and guaranteed , as long as not contrary to Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution .
Prepare for the establishment of Indonesian Academy of Sciences ( since 1991 the main task is then handled by the Minister of State for Research and Technology with Presidential Decree no . 179 in 1991) .
In line with the development of national capacity in science and technology , organization of scientific institutions in Indonesia has also experienced growth and development . Therefore it is necessary to conduct the review and adjustment of the main tasks and functions and organizational structure LIPI according to the stage and towards the development of science and technology , the Presidential Decree no . 1967 128 , dated August 23, 1967 amended by Presidential Decree no . 43 in 1985 , and in order to further refinement , dated January 13, 1986 ditetpkan Presidential Decree no . 1 year 1986 on the Indonesian Institute of Sciences , and the latest by Presidential Decree no . 103 of 2001 .
